Cyber Security Regulation

Government response on Regulating Consumer Smart Product Cyber Security

The UK Government has published their response to the recent consultation on proposals for regulating consumer IoT devices, along with two pieces of research underpinning these proposals. One of these pieces of research [PDF file] cites work by Sarah in relation to the portability of data collected by consumer IoT devices and the relative paucity of publicly available information around privacy and security in relation to connected toys [PDF file]. The other research paper [PDF file] is co-authored by Dr Jason Nurse, primary supervisor of the Families and IoT project.

The three core aspects of the consultation have been carried forward unchanged:

  • No default passwords
  • Ensure a means of reporting vulnerabilities
  • Ensure transparency on the period a device will receive security updates.
